Over 520 documented cases worldwide! And still growing!

UPDATE: Apple censores our thread on their forum. This is happening very often.
On 5 april 2007, another relevant thread has gone, and several threads are still locked. Apple probably thinks that this is the way to solve her problem: hiding it.
But there are many many loyal customers that everyday discover that Apple Powerbooks has serious quality problems.

Apple still does not reply to customers who have defected Powerbook display.
Everyday, on my mailbox, a new user tells me that his display is showing that damn pixel lines.
Check the thread on the Apple Discussion Forum, the link is in the sidebar!

Apple continues to censore our threads and posts!

Dear friend,
our lifes are getting harder day by day.
We bought a defected product and can't obtain the producer's attenction.
Apple is deleting every post about the pixel lines issue on his forum.
By the way, I'll continue to create new threads that points to this blog, in this way we'll try to put togheter as much user experiences as possible.
Pictures tells by themselves.

Apple chosen to ignore her BEST customers (I own 5 Macs, and 4 are PRO computers)... I can't understand why.

Our products have a severe quality issue.

But probably Apple thinks that Mac users will never buy a PC.

The pixel line issue is typical of any LCD where the power inverter has gone. If your machine has been dropped, or worked on by an authorized service technician who didn't properly seal the machine back up when finishing their repair causing the power inverter cable to get frayed, this can happen quite easily. The latter instance could be argued to be an AppleCare issue. The first instance is clearly not, because it is accidental damage, which Apple never has covered. If the machine shows no visible sign of defect externally, you could argue if you see it happen straight out of the factory that this is an AppleCare issue. The longer you wait before you report it, the more likely Apple will think you damaged your own machine by accident.

Another non-accident caused issue is a logicboard overheating because its fans don't properly operate or improper amount of cooling gel was applied. The former can be detected by the hardware test volume which came with your machine's restore disks. The latter if you apply your own gel, will void your warranty, and you should only let an authorized service technician do that. If the hardware test shows anything wrong, take it to AppleCare. AppleCare's phone numbers are here:

http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html

Apple's instructions for running hardware test for Macs which did not come with a separate hardware test CD are on these two articles:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303081 for Intel Macs

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86287 for PowerPC Macs

Any internal repair that was done by a non-authorized service technician, attempt to modify the fan speeds without Apple software, or accident would not be covered under AppleCare. That's what is known as an "unauthorized modification".

These places will repair such machines cheaper than Apple but out of warranty:

http://www.dttservice.com/
http://www.powerbookresq.com/
http://www.microdocusa.com/
http://www.macspecialist.com/
http://www.techrestore.com/

Some are available for international repairs.

Your thread on Apple Discussions violates policy as it:

1. Is a poll.
2. It rants. Especially with loud text.
3. And asks questions of Apple's policy.

Hence that's the reason they delete your thread.

If you were simply to ask for a technical reason why your problem exists, and work on finding technical solutions, that would be acceptable on Apple Discussions.

This survived less than 10 minutes in the feedback section of the Apple Discussions:

"Please stop deleting threads about the PowerBook display defects.

On November 27th, the forum administrators started deleting information about the massive occurence of broken PowerBook G4 17" lcds. Each thread had thousands of views and plenty of dozens of documented failures.

Please stop deleting this information.

Sincerely,

To the previous poster of the comment: Apple tries to cover up the issue and wants to shut down people. Period.

"Did u try a differnt resolution in the display settings and then go back to the correct one?"

Of course we did. This issue is related to faulty contacts in the display data cable. The defects occur if the connector is improperly sealed or badly applied.

I would like to ask that 17in owners also acknowledge the plight of other owners! I own a 12in powerbook that is affected by this issue, and know of other 12in/15in users in the same boat. A few of us posted to vincenzo's (deleted) thread as there seemed to be more momentum among 17in users, but we received no recognition either on those pages or on these sites/blogs. I realize that our presence may undermine your "we shelled out for the MOST expensive machine available machine so this is unacceptable" argument, but rest assured we also paid top dollar for what we perceived to be premium products in the compact/mid-size notebook range. Maybe we should set up another 12in/15in pixel lines issue page, however it strikes me that it makes more sense to try to make our collective voice heard together!

I am affected as well.. It started today, I have one blue/whitish vertical 1px bar.

I bought my 17" Powerbook about 18 months ago through the mac web-store (from the Netherlands).

We do acknowledge your plight. The Apple forums are littered with LCD problems on all of their PBs, TiBooks etc. Unfortunately Apple will never do a recall of all defective LCDs, so we have to do it model by model.

I would love to add you guys into this database as it is clearly the same problem (it would not surprise me if it was the same part comng out of the same factory!), but we have to do this model by model if we want to have any chance of Apple rectifying these issues for us.

If you have access to your own website and mySQL database, contact me and I'll send you the code to set up your own logs. I would then strongly encourage you to contact other 15" PB owners with the same problem, then once you have enough substantiated claims, start to contact the media and consumer protection agencies.

Hopefully we will all get these defective LCDs replaced with top quality ones. The kind that we expected initially when we bought these top of the range computers!

Regards, David Hudd.

Hello, I am not sure who runs the "Bridget Riley" PowerBooks database, but I thought it'd probably be best to post here. I made a mistake with my image attached to my post, as I forgot to add the IMG tag. Also, if it's not too much trouble, it should probably be resized as the dimensions are right off of the camera. I have virtually nothing on the computer I'm using, the screen on my 17-inch PowerBook has gone completely black and the computer I'm now using is extremely difficult to do anything on. Thank you very much.

Hello Henry, I am running the "Bridget Riley" database (dull art humor I know. But if I didn't poke a little fun at this situation I think I'd be in constant tears!).

As per the instructions on the site, you don't need the image tag to post, just the www.yoursite.com/image.jpg link to your image. The site does the rest in terms of sizing etc.

At present your image is loading in just fine. If you want to post another image, email the link to me at david at crosspond dot com and I'll post it up for you.

My laptop had a vertical blue line appear on christmas eve.

For all those in the UK, there may be hope to get it repaired by Apple free of charge even if you are out of warrenty.
We spoke to 'Which?' legal service who advised us on our rights and the sale of goods act which superceeds any warrenty limitations.

I spoke to Apple today, and after quoting the sale of goods act, where a product has to be fit for purpose, they agreed to pay for the repair as a 'special case'.
You can make a claim upto 6 years after the date of purchase, but this depends on the nature of the fault.

Im impressed with Apple's support of the product, after a little prodding!
This is what I would expect for a top quality manufacturer.
I love using my Apple, and I never want to go back to using PC's!

Im taking my laptop to a Apple service centre on Monday so fingers crossed!

If vertilce lines appear.

Please call Mac customer support (if in Australia on 13362)and register your complaint.

Make sure you get though the service depatment and case number.

Then write a letter to Apple Customer Support with the case number.

A letter of complaint, with a date and signature is a legal document.

And tell anybody you know with this problem to do the same.

This is a common fault to 17" powerbooks accross the world and mac wont do anything about it until enough people register their problem.

They all came from the same factory the same week.

Even if Mac do acknowledge it as a "published known issue", you register a compliant, and MAC are not going get in contact and sort out the problem. Its still up to you to follow it up.

And Mac say's "they stand by their product"

I'm quiet good at complaining. I told them I has been using Mac for 10 years, that I teach and that I would not recommend Macs to any of my collegues or students.
They then offered me a discount on my next Mac and emailed me a discount voucher............

PLEASE help and forward this on to anyone you know who uses a MAC laptop.

My congratulations to the UK owner who managed to get a repair by confronting Apple with the Sale Of Goods Act.

This is precisely the same we did, as there is an equivalent to the Sale Of Goods Act in German law.

Not only did we confront them with law situation, but as well with the fact of mass damage. Staying factual was hard enough for me. I had to write two times because all I received the first time was some kind of a copy-and-pasted "We don't care"-note.

And Apple really doesn't care at all and does nothing even remotely similar to "standing by their product". They demand inherent fault is proved by an authorized expert dissecting our machines at our own costs. Not only does this cost a ridiculous amount of money, it will also most likely destroy the display entirely. Then each of us would have to sue Apple individually.

After nicely writing down that I had to prove everything and pay for everything, regardless of all the other equal cases, that impertinent Apple employee even had the nerve to write: "Since your device has never been repaired, that [proving the obvious mass-sloppiness by Apple] will be difficult." I guess she was even smiling, writing these lines. For the record: My PowerBook was purchased at Apple, registered at Apple and repaired by Apple when the motherboard died after 6 months.

This is the most disgusting experience with a company I ever had, not to mention the crappy quality and the amount of money spent.

I am about to go to an Apple store with mine next week and would like to know what to say to them (other than point and say "SEEEE?").

Has anyone had the problem fixed?

All I know is that in germany the Apple support seems to know something about the problem. A technician at the hotline immediately knew that this is a problem of the flex cable. But I'm afraid to tell you that I don't know anyone who got his powerbook repaired if it was older than 12-13 months.

Susan said...

Is that "repaired FREE of CHARGE" or "Repaired at all"?

That's repaired "free of charge". Nevertheless I heard that the displays are out of stock. So at the moment there is no chance that it could be repaired respectively replaced. Even so Apple charges 800$ for a new one.

Now it is so obvious that this is a manufacture problem and it totally pisses me of that APPLE are avoiding to solve this problem you ....My Mac looks like bran new it has never had one fall not even a scratch on it ,and if it did i would pay what ever the cost to fix it ....but when nothing has happened and it is clearly a manufacturing problem why should we pay more money to Apple for ther mistakes ..... we pay top dollar for this product and we deserve better customer service . I went to my local Mac store today to report the matter and they told me it would cost 1.000 dollars which is terrible THIS HAS REALLY LEFT A BAD TASTE IN MY MOUTH .

MY DEFECTS AND AN APPLE REACTION TO THEM:

ME:
Powerbook 17" bought June 05.
1a. FAULT/PROBLEM

A two inch wide translucent vertical zone - sometimes blinking (between two malfunctioning displays), sometimes stable - text from previous files still shining through - appeared suddenly in October 2006.

A vertical, one pixel yellow line, a vertical, one pixel cyan line, another pixel cyan line,a bluish line etc. appeared 1-3 weeks after another. I now have five vertical lines and the blinking, translucent 2 inch zone on my screen.

LETTER TO APPLE COMPUTER, SWEDEN
Defect explained, all machine data, photos etc cent to Apple, Sweden.

A month later came an answer and some further explanations from Apple, but in Ireland, as follows.

APPLE: The fault derives most probably from the LVDS cable between the logic board and the display. But that fault is not known for your model.

> An Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) in your area would be able
> to facilitate the repair and would be able to give the price of the
> repair, for part and labour.
>
> I can not recommend you to replace the LVDS cable yourself since the
> part is not readily available for customers, normally it has to be
> ordered through an AASP.

AFTER CHECKING WITH THE AASP

ME: Thanks. Speaking to our AASP the
technician says he cannot find the cable as a replace unit. He says
that the cable is incorporated with the display so both cable and
display must be replaced at a cost of some 6000 SEK. Is that correct
really??

APPLE:
I have checked the repair documentation and it states that the AASP can either try to adjust the LVDS cable (if it has been pinched or is out of alignment) or replace the logic board. Unfortunately, on your model the LVDS cable is integrated into the logic board. The information you have received from your AASP is correct.

ME: I have again checked with our local AASP.
They have confirmed that the case is not one of pinched or non-aligned LVDS cable and that the only remedy is replacing the screen with the LVDS cables connected to it (not to the logic board). The cost is about 6000 SEK.

I do not intend to order such an expensive repair on such a new machine which is evidently part of a batch of machines from the W8 factory in Schanghai with serial numbers starting on W85. Instead I will join the Internet-group on site http://www.crosspond.com/apple.php requesting that Apple take their responsibility and recalls this unsuccessful batch of machines.

I am a consultant in international project and change process management and use my 17 inch powerbook to demonstrate and visualize change processes and computer support in such processes. I have been a keen advocate of Apple-machines over the years (see the Swedish AppleNews 2-91 and the article there about me.... The display failure on my machine will thus be shown to a number of managers and I will not hide my disappointment in the present Apple quality and policy not to take care of a serious hardware failure.

In case Apple does not take care of this type of failure now shown on the same batch of machines by 120 Powerbook G4 owners ..... I do not intend to risk being a victim again of the mentioned Apple quality and policy decay.

I do hope that you will convey this message to relevant Apple management.

Took this link from an Apple discussion thread before they did their usual thing of deleting it. Well posted whoever you are! Seems like some other laptops out there have had very similar vertical line issues. Dell have responded to complaints that several models of laptops fitted with 17" displays were developing vertical lines similar to what we have been witnessing with the 17" PowerBooks. Dell have agreed to fix their faulty products. Rather than go into details, you can read more about them in the following link:

http://direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2007/04/09/10675.aspx

At least some companies understand their responsibility to their customers. I suggest if any people call Apple regarding their problem that they mention this link. Make sure you question the Apple employee you talk too that they have actually taken a note of the link, they could not relay it back to me when I called!

Well done Dell for treating your customers with the respect they deserve on this one. Apple has a lot to learn!

I wrote an email to sjobs@apple.com regarding this issue and got a call back from one of his lackeys:

Ken Bell
Executive Offices of Apple
M-F 8am to 5pm Pacific
916 399 7169

A phone conversation with Ken resulted in the following:

1. He knows nothing of a recall.

2. Apple provides a $350 out of warranty repair on any defect (display or otherwise), with a 5-7 business day turnaround time.

3. He would not comment on Dell's response to their display problem saying that it would be foolish for him to do so.

4. He was insistent on offering a parallel to malfunctioning hard drives and how often that happens. Hard drives? WTF, this is the whole friggin' display!

I kinda lost my temper towards the end of the conversation after it went nowhere. So if anyone wants to call him to get some kind of result, then feel free.

Whether he really is from Steve Jobs' office or just some tech support guy, I don't know.

Maybe if hundreds of people call him and his voice mail gets full and he ends up logging all of these complaints, then it might lead somewhere.

BTW, all my apple forum posts have been deleted also.

Two lines so far, a pretty yellow one and a hot magenta flavored one.

Hi Vincenzo & PBsters,

Thanks for providing such an excellent blogging resource for folks outraged at Apple’s shameful conduct in censoring discussion of the 17inch 1.67Ghz G4 PowerBook "Bridget Riley" display defect, and their censuring of people engaged with that discussion.

As an owner of an afflicted PowerBook with some time to spare, I conducted some campaigning research into the issue, and posted the results to the official Apple Discussions forum. Despite containing an appeal that, “In the interests of free speech, fair discussion, customer loyalty and respecting Apple’s customers, I hope and trust you will leave this thread open to replies,” nevertheless the Apple Discussions forum moderators promptly deleted my very first post!

So, inspired by your good example, I’ve posted my campaigning research results to my own blog:

17inch G4 1.67GHz PowerBooks - vertical line screen defect: Recall for Repair?
http://301url.com/pb17lines

For those concerned about this issue, there’s some actions you can take and some questions you may be able to answer contained therein, as well as live links to all the related web resources I could find.

I know this might seem like I’m trying to create a rival blogging resource, but that’s really not my intention at all. The comment facility in both blogs is invaluable, but not well suited for long and structured contributions. And the more places on the web that address the issue, the more likely it is that we’ll snag some media interest, and increase the obligation on Apple to act with honour in instigating a global a Display Repair Extension Program.

Peace & Love,

Tim Jones,

Like the blog page you put together, very concise and informative. I have linked it on digg.com under the title "Apple lets loyal customers down showing its true colours". I am not by nature an agitator, but this whole situation has me quite angry, hence the title selected.

In addition to taking the steps you suggest, several of which I have already, It might also help if people go onto Digg and digg this post and/or the couple of other postings relating to the topic. The founder of Digg is a big Apple fan (as am I, though increasingly less so) and he may decide if there is enough interest in the topic to bring it up on their highly subscribed video podcast. Long shot, but we need all the exposure we can get. I am also going to try and contact the This Week in Tech (TWiT) and MackBreak Weekly podcast people to see if the topic can be brought up there. Both are highly popular technology podcasts and feature respected industry professionals. I have not found contact details for these yet, but will post the emails when I do.

Good job again on the page you put together.

One reminder:

EVERYBODY... call Apple and get a case number at the very least if you have this problem. You will most likely need it if an extension or recall is initiated. I'm sure everyone knows this, but just incase.

Good luck all.

I posted this in Apple forum.

My Powerbook was purchased at a Guitar Center in Minnesota mid 05'. It came in a recording studio package that came to just over $5,000. Mom and Dad helped with that, I'm a broke college student. First they thought I was crazy for buying an Apple, my family is all PC. Second they thought I was crazy for buying such an expensive Apple. I told them that after I start recording music with it would pay for it self over time. I had always used Apple computers of some sort in school so I knew the opperating system and had only seen and heard good things about the quality of their products. So I bought our families first Apple, a Powerbook G4 17"...the top of the line. Being a broke college student (having just paid $3,000 for a new laptop) I found myself without money to purchase Applecare. Then I figured I shouldn't need it anyway, I'll treat this machine as if I fathered it.
To no avail. With in a few months I was in to my local Applestore having them replace a faulty Superdrive. All imported cd audio had strange clicks and pops in between song and over quite parts. They (Applestore people) said they had never heard of the problem, ok. It doesn't matter, they fixed THAT manufacturing defect.
Now I'm afflicted with these one pixel wide anomalies popping up all over my screen, I got three in one night a few days ago. As I said, this machine has never been dropped, jarred, thrown, or used as a coaster (you wouldn't do any of those things to a baby would you?).
Editing music is common on computers these days. Unfortunetly, with every line that shows up, this machine becomes less and less useful. The pastel colors of these lines are often the same as the audio wave form colors for music editing softwear (Which is a setting you cannot change). Besides being the most destracting thing I could imagine, the lines also actually make it difficult to read and get proper data off the screen, which I admit I had been taking for granted. Also, I haven't done it yet but putting music to video is something I could see myself doing down the line and well...
So, I'm really not trying to be angry about this but I don't have enough money to pay Apple to tell me what is wrong (which I've heard is around $1,000), I don't have enough money to repair it on my own, and I don't have enough money to buy a new laptop; I'm a broke college student who spent all his money on a computer that is failing him. I'm up to 5 lines now and waiting to hear from Apple to see if there is a reason to continue to purchase their products. Staying the course will bring none.

Hi Comrades,

To give our blossoming campaigning activity more of an identity, I’ve named my blog the Free Repair Campaign for Apple 17inch PowerBooks:

The name change reflects a shift in my attitude – enough with the researching and consolidating information, it’s time to bite back!

Apple Inc is a multi-billion-dollar transnational corporation, and it’s treating some of its most loyal customers, allies and advocates with ignorance, censorship and censure. As long as we act as isolated, atomised individuals, Apple will hold the whip hand. But we have the strength of numbers in our favour – our powerfulness lies in us coordinating the international application of our collective intelligence, determination, and creativity.

The great only appear great because we are on our knees. LET US RISE!”
James Larkin
source: statue on O’Connell Street, Dublin, Ireland

Or as Malcolm X put it, "I for one believe that if you give people a thorough understanding of what confronts them and the basic causes that produce it, they'll create their own program, and when the people create a program, you get action." I say it’s time for us to create a program – so who’s with me?

How about we begin by making a concerted, coordinated and international drive to get the media on our side and boost our cause with the oxygen of publicity?

To that end, I’ve thought through and designed...

A Two Phase Distributed Publicity Seeking Campaign Task

> Own an Apple 17inch G4 1.67Ghz PowerBook with the Dreaded “Bridget Riley” vertical lines screen defect?
> Tired of being ignored, censored and censured by Apple Inc?
> Want to help out in securing a global Display Repair Extension Program?
> Then TUNE IN, READ ON and JOIN IN!

From my experiences in grass-roots campaigning, I can confidently assert that one activity in which we can all play a part, with a relatively compact effort from each of us, yet yielding potentially high impact results, is a two phase Distributed Publicity Seeking campaign task. The more we get journalists to cover the censorship, censuring and silence scandal at Apple Inc, the greater the pressure there will be on Apple to act with honour in instigating the global Display Repair Extension Program we’d like to see.

So begins our new Publicity Campaign Page, from where I seek your help in creating and disseminating our first Media Release:

Thanks for reading this far. Now please click on the link above, assimilate the tactic, check out the draft Media Release, and I hope you’ll feel inspired to actively commit some of your intelligence, determination, and creativity to our cause.

Hi All,

There’s a new wiki dealing with our “Bridget Riley” screen defect:

You’ll find all the info that used to be at Tim Jones’ blog, plus more: a Discussions forum, a help page on making Your Contributions, Campaign Resources, six ACTION pages, and even a Campaign Mascot. Unlike a blog, to which you can make only unstructured comments, a wiki is a website that can be edited by anyone – like Wikipedia (which uses the same MediaWiki environment). So my hope is that it may become a focal point for our campaign, with many editors, all of us contributing initiatives and supporting each others actions.

I’ve explained why I think a Publicity Campaign would be a great tactic right now on the Discussions forum, created two ACTION+ Publicity pages and a downloadable Media Release draft:
> http://simurl.com/MR1-draft (448KB PDF)

I could use your help with distributing the Media Release final version from Fri 01 Jun 07 – here’s the plan:

Hope you’ll want to join me in turning up the pressure on Apple Inc by a notch or two.

Warn regards,

Dalinian

Hi All,

One conclusion I draw from analysing the events leading up to Apple's most analogous Display Repair Extension Program is that the 15inch G4 PowerBook's 'white spots' defect had media coverage early on. As yet, our defect lacks for publicity, so I think that one activity in which we can all play a part, with a relatively compact effort from each of us, yet yielding potentially high impact results, is a two phase Publicity Campaign. The more Apple has to answer an array of journalists' questions about their censorship, censure and silence policies coupled with stinging afflicted owners for expensive and prolonged repairs, then the more pressure Apple will be under to acknowledge, investigate and repair our PowerBooks for free.

Phase One of our Publicity Campaign is now in progress, and it would be great if you could lend a hand - here's how:

1. Download our Media Release 1: Apple Inc Lets Down Loyal Customers with Censorship, Censuring & Silence (448KB PDF)
2. Seek out up to five journalist prospects (from the online tech media, for preference) who aren’t yet on our ACTION+: Publicity Contacts page (to avoid duplication), by online searching or real world research
3. Add a list of those journalists and the media outlets they work for to our ACTION+: Publicity Contacts page (to avoid future duplication)
4. Send our Media Release 1 to all those one-to-five journalists, either online or by snail mail
5. Encourage any other known folks with afflicted PowerBooks (or even friends, relatives, sympathisers, etc.) to do the same

None of this is set in stone - we can discuss it publicly at Campaign Discussions#Publicity Campaign, and do please feel free to contact me with any questions, suggestions, recommendations, or loophole corrections - by leaving a message on my Wikia talk page or by email to tim_d_jone{at}yahoo.co.uk.

Warn regards,

APPLES QUALITY PROBLEMS

Writing this on my 17” Apple PowerBook G4 – the Rolls-Royce among laptops – a yellow, vertical line flickers on the display. It is line number 27 establishing. Lines of different colors, magenta, green, blue etc. with a width of one pixel and a flickering zone of some two inches width, half translucent, have previously occupied the display. This has taken place during a couple of months, starting when the machine was about 15 months old.

Three vertical lines within the mentioned zone change their color in pace with the flickering of the zone. These many display phenomena make showing of pictures, films and presentations impossible on this, the most expensive flag-ship of laptop computers from Apple. The company boasting itself of making better products than others.

The defects thus started to show some time after the end of the guarantee period. A letter to Apple Computer in Sweden with all data, picture of the defects etc. resulted, after some time, in a phone call and an e-mail from Apple, Ireland:

”I have got an answer from Apple Engineering. The defect you have, is nothing we can cover under guarantee or with a guarantee exception. The defect derives with high probability from the so called LVDS-cable from the logic board to the display. But that defect is not known on your type of machine.”

Not known? Strange.
Googling the Internet it turns out that exactly this defect is being discussed on quite a number of web-sites. On one such web-site, machine data and pictures are being collected for documentation of the cases, to-day about 200 of them. Most defects are related to 17” PowerBook-machines with serial numbers starting with W85 produced at a factory in Shanghai, China, the first half of year 2005 – just as mine. And some ”threads” of discussions - on the Apple’s own web-site discussing the defects, had been erased by Apple itself. Before one such thread was erased, I had time to read about a case, where a defect display had been changed for a new one, which immediately showed its first vertical line. So – that this type of defect should be unknown to Apple is just not true.

Looking at the Internet for Apple-defects, you discover many other quality issues with Apple-products. The re-call of dangerous batteries some time ago is known. And displays with white spots are being exchanged by the company. But everything else – for example the cases with key-boards melting from overheated machines, nearly causing fires, make you wonder about the level of risks with Apple-machines. Risks do not appear to be negligible, neither for the good function of your machine nor for your health. I told a colleague, also with a 17” PowerBook, about my screen defects and heard him saying that his machine had lost contact with the hard-drive. Judging from other Internet-cases not the only one.

Other, minor defects, have also shown up early on my Rolls-Royce machine from Apple. For example that the net adapter cable must be turned to a certain position in order to start charging, or that the lock between lid and computer has stopped functioning long ago. So, no wonder if I and many other Apple-customers with supposed ”top of the line” machines now on the Internet are witnessing the quality defects discovered and our great disappointment: does Apple nowadays sell shit products “made in China”? The disappointment over the Apple-nonchalance we have encountered is multiplied when Dell announces that they are exchanging displays with the same defects produced at the same time as the Apple display – perhaps from the same sub-supplier? (See http://www.dellverticalline.com/)

Well, should one invest in a repair/exchange of the 17” screen of an expensive Apple-machine with doubtful quality?

Contacting the local Apple service I was informed that you cannot only change the LVDS-cable, as it is fixed to the display. Further that the cost for cable plus display is about 800 USD. Now, that is only 1/4 of what this, the most expensive and most prestige-full Apple laptop had cost 15 months earlier. But for only one or two hundred dollars more you get a 17” PC/VISTA laptop with as good or better prestanda and capacity. Surely Apple may still be leading the software development over MS and Linux, but if the Apple OS-X and a few Apple-exclusive programs only can run on machines from one single supplier which delivers products with a doubtful quality, and if this supplier does not take their responsibility for defect products, well then Apple has ceased being an alternative in any sense.

Just another quick and easy way to spread the word of this problem. I have just uploaded a picture to my FaceBook account for all to see.

If you have one or a member of a similar social networking or "I don't get out much because of the kids so need to keep in contact and meet new people online" group kind of person like me, then I suggest you do the same.

I have well over 100 lines, they first started about 18 months after purchase. Transparent areas on PNG's have a white haze, and the color resolution is degrading, there is hideous dithering on gradients. As of yesterday, 1/6th of the screen is now a flickering color depending on the color displayed.

Lines with flicker

Nasty dithering

hi there,
i developed a pixel line a couple of weeks ago on my PB 17'' G4 and knew nothing about this issue(even after i had a nightmare dealing with apple).i was furious with the way i was treated on the phone.tech support knew about the issue with the display.my only objective at this stage was how to get my screen fixed(can you believe it).i thought that because they knew it was a problem, naturally they would fix it.i then proceeded thru a myriad of phone calls getting more and more frustrated. the staff i dealt with from apple ireland to apple USA ranged from pleasant to extemely rude and all were unhelpful. 2 hours on the phone and i felt like a shot duck
after that i googled the problem and was astounded by what i read.i am so disgusted with apple.even if my display was fixed free of charge they would have to do a lot of explaining to convince me to use them again.
i'm still pursuing this unfolding scandal. i only use my laptop a few times a week for my photographic work and my sympathy goes out to all of you that have to look at these lines every day.
what a disgrace apple are!

I have been contacted by a couple of people in the US who are looking into taking out a class action law suit against Apple over the vertical lines issue. One of them is a lawyer called Eric Pavlack who is investigating the experiences that others have had with Apple over this problem.

If you wish to contribute (and I urge you to) then he can be contac via email at epavlack at cohenandmalad dot com or via telephone on +1 317-636-6481.

Posted to Apple Discussions 9/11/07, removed several hours later:
- - -
First line last week, second today.

I registered on crosspond.com/apple/home and then called AppleCare, where I got a case number. There, I was told "Apple is aware of this emerging issue." I then got transferred to Apple Customer Relations where I spoke with a useless "supervisor." I asked for that person's supervisor and after a lengthy wait, got Elizabeth, who gave me the superb satisfaction of actually listening, and responding without apparently reading off a screen.

Elizabeth's statement, after checking her database, was that Apple is not aware that this is a problem. This points to the vital importance of everyone calling in and doing more than just getting a case #. Supervisor Elizabeth suggested that I file a formal complaint, which she would do on my behalf, and which will go directly "to the policy-makers." The complaint will suggest that the vertical line issue warrants further investigation. Now I am to watch the Apple Support page in hopes of an extended warranty program on this issue, as Apple will not notify people who have obtained case numbers on this specific issue. (Why won't they? How difficult could that be?) Not that I was given a shred of hope -- just that I will not be contacted by Apple, despite registering the issue.

Elizabeth also said "all 17" PBs start with the serial #W85." Anyone know otherwise? Presumably, all in this forum are in the W85 subset.

Like all the rest of you, I'm an Apple evangelizer, have converted many, many people to Apple products, especially computers. I have used Macs since the first one in 1984: the 128k Mac with no hard drive, one 400k floppy drive on which we kept the OS, app, data, and fonts! I've owned only Macs these past 23 years, and many of them. I'm also an Apple stock holder, now, sadly, wondering if I should sell.

I, like all of you, am crying.

After a few months the first vertical line appeared, my display died. Now i don't have any lines, i don't have anything on my display. I had 7-8 lines before the display died.
I'm from Paris, France and i don't know who to call and what to do. I reported this to Apple and they gave me a case number and that's all.
If anyone can give me any advice what to do, i'd be grateful.
Feel free to email me on dejavuk15@gmail.com

I have been an avid MAC user since 1995 having purchased 4 desktop versions including the 20 inch i Mac G 5. I have purchased over the last 12 years, 4 powerbook versions.

The deterioration of my current machine, a 17 inch powerbook with the same serial number of hundreds of others reporting a similar problem, is most distressing. There are now 7 lines ACROSS THE SCREEN which are profoundly difficult for viewing of videos etc and a distraction otherwise. Since the number of screen lines is increasing, it is evident that rapid DETERIORATION IS OCCURRING. I UNDERSTAND THAT MANY OWNERS OF THIS PARTICULAR BATCH OF 17" SCREEN powerbooks WITH IDENTICAL SERIAL SEQUENCE HAVE BEEN SUBJECT TO THE SAME PROBLEM. Most of my friends are IBM users and this dysfunction places pressure on me as a long term Apple enthusiast. It is obviously a design or manufacture item fault. Will Apple show the same commitment to replacing this batch as the users have shown in choosing Apple above the CHEAPER, MORE POPULAR, BUT PREVIOUSLY MORE EXCELLENT COMPUTERS? Here are the batch details:

Hardware:

Machine Name: PowerBook G4 17"
Machine Model: PowerBook5,7
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.2)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1.67 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 1.5 GB
Bus Speed: 167 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.9.1f1
Serial Number: W85.....

I was reading hours of blogs and threads. I found some solutions from a technician but i didn't understood compleately and when I ask the mail was wrong and I didn't receive a reply from him in the apple forum. I agree with a boicot and I agree that who use apple computers (and software) will never switch to windows OS but why not switch to PC with linux OS ? I know is not so "fashion" and effective as macs, but I think there's nothing worst than having a line(s) and the only think to do is wait to watch how Apple support ignore our problem. is it our problem ? oh yes... we bought that computers.

I was at 7 one month ago. I am now over 50. I am going to have a third party put a screen in. I will atleast get a 1 year warranty. Applecare said they would only give me 90 days. What a rip-off. I have to fix it, because I cant get an other system for the price of the screen. So it looks like an annual cost of $500 to maintain this machine. That is just plain BS.

Hi all
It's the 1st Jan 08 and I've just been reading the Apple support discussions on 17"PB display problems. I myself have a W85..... with 14 VL of various pretty colours!! With the evidence provided on various sites, without Host editing, I think it is time uder the Sale of Goods Act 1979(as amended) that Apple should make a stand publicly. Dell have admitted a fault why can't Apple?? Or will Apple pass the blame to Samsung?

I have the same problem but with my PowerBook G4 15" ...

I was until today an avid Mac user but recent experiences with them have turned me off Apple for good.

Having bought a G4 Mac 15" 1.67 Ghz Laptop exactly two years ago it started giving me strange horizontal lines across my screen which stretched a third of the way up. I was told today that it would cost 600 Euros to repair, and that despite it being a known issue with this model, and despite it coming after only TWO years, Apple refuse to replace the display for free or give any contribution at all as a gesture of goodwill.

I have setup a forum today which I hope to regularly maintain in an attempt to warn others of my experiences.

http://rip-off-mac.blogspot.com/

If anybody here wants has any 15" related issues then please post. Thanks.

I´m not having this same problem, but I do have some others with my PB 15´ G4, also serial number W85___
I bought it in October 2005, I list problems:
- In 2 years of use I´ve begun having the vertical or horizontal lines problem with RAW files, not on display. I believe is a bad transferring data, caused by overheating. It has happened transfering from both external hard drive or ipod as hard disk.

- I´ve had battery replacement twice. I have my third battery now.

- After power supply problems I had logic board replaced under warantee (3 months after it was bought).
3 months a go power supply problems again, dc-cable was found burned. The cabled was changed.

- Wondering about the burned cable: The computer gets really hot, and I´ve never heard any fan sound. I was surprised how silent my computer was, until I heard the noise of fans of brand new Mac Book Pro, and I started thinking maybe my machine has always run without fans.
I´ve took it to check to the repair store, I´m waiting for the diagnostic.

I´m afraid this machine has never been as it should. And, if it´s possible 2 years of overheat, the problems definetely start to show up. I also think diagnostics are not accurate.
I just wanted to post this to see if the factory in Shangai made more mistakes. My computer was manufactured there, in the same period, first half of year 2005. (serial n. W85__)

I have had the same problem for just under a year now. The problem started when my 3 year applecare was still valid and my 3rd display went in 2 2 months before my applecare would expire.

For the record, warranty on repairs do exist with apple but they are only valid for 3 months. You guessed it, after 4 months the display broke down AGAIN. I had to pay the bill myself according to the repairshop (official apple authorized). A whopping €650! Offcoruse I jumped on the case and started calling apple. After some 4 people I got myself what is called an "exception" on the WHOLE machine , so that it could be determined WHAT the actual problem was/is/should be.

My laptop has been returned to me todat and I found my desktop to be curiously small. When I checked I found out that my display has been replaced with the LATEST 17" model powerbook, so I got a resolution bump for free ;)

(my model: M9689LL/A 1440 x 900)
(latest model :M9970LL/A 1680 x 1050 )

In my opinion this can indicate one of a few things:

Either this is an honest mistake, doubtfull...

They felt they should compensate me, doubtfull since they allready gave me an exception, by Gods grace...

Or they felt the previous line of 17" displays WERE faulty indeed and gave me a newer display which does not yet seem to display this behaviour.

So, perhaps we have precedence for other people to make use of ?

If you have this problem, here's a few things you can do:

Register your PowerBook at
http://www.crosspond.com/apple/welcome

Sign this petition:
http://www.petitiononline.com/maclines/petition.html

Read the exciting (& infuriating) info here:
http://scratchpad.wikia.com/wiki/Apple%27s_Censorship_%26_Censure

Post in Apple Discussions. Something non-inflammatory like "I have this problem too, is there any new suggestions on what to do about it?" Here's a relevant thread that's been there for a while:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=967815&tstart=0

Call AppleCare, get a case #, and ask them how to file a formal complaint (so Apple has a record of the extent of the problem and is pressured to react).

Leave "Management Comments" here:
http://www.apple.com/contact/feedback.html

Write to high-profile Mac news & blog sites and ask them to cover this story. Sites such as
http://blogs.zdnet.com/Apple/
http://www.tuaw.com/
etc

There are some other suggestions here:
http://www.crosspond.com/apple/links

Call and write Apple corporate HQ and Public Relations
http://www.apple.com/contact/

Note that when people complain to AppleCare in non-U.S. countries, that info is not forwarded to any central location, so Apple never finds out about worldwide complaint patterns that indicate a defect. Ideally non-U.S. residents should be sure to call U.S. HQ and PR so all the complaints hopefully also get to a central location.

Take some of the steps documented in various pages at this site:

Hi There!

I'm just yet one more user with the pixel lines on a 17inch PowerBook G4.
After reading the posts on this blog, I called Apple to see if there was anything being done, of course the answer was a flat-out "no"

So I filed a complaint while on the phone with Apple, hopefully it helps the cause. I also had AppleCare, but the problem happened shortly after the warranty ended.

Let's keep pushing the Apple guys to stand by their defective product.

Loc: Los Angeles, USA

Steve Jobs thinks he's G-d but's it's really Bridget Riley. I have been suffering from this syndrome now for 2 years and two thirds of my screen is now gone from this pixel cancer. I've called apple numerous times and they said it would cost 600-1000 US dollars to fix. I paid 5000 new including software for this machine and have never dropped it or abused it. It's a W85. I'm suing.

Okay !

Just counted and I now have 113 vertical lines!
Wow. Isn't that amazing! Its like the more you pay
the more lines you get..

.. now using this amazing laptop as little more than
a media server and email thing.

Can you actually fix this problem? Was told by Apple Center in Melbourne, OZ, that you would have to replace the whole screen ($1000)

Instinctively, I'd guess that there's probably a ribbon cable (or similar) connecting the screen to the on board video card, and that the contacts of that cable just need a good cleaning. ...Of course that's a pretty big project - taking my Powerbook apart to that extent, I'm curious to know if any of you have already tried this, and wether or not this would just be a waste of my time. I've taken my Powerbook apart many times, and I'm very comfortable doing it, but don't want to unless I think it'll actually fix the problem.

If anyone has any experiences/suggestions about this, I would sure appreciate it.
My email address is saghi@peeltheatom.net
Thanks everyone!

-Adam

I have horizontal lines. It started with 1, went to 3, and now there's about 20 all in the center of the screen. Does anyone know if a new LCD will fix the problem? I'm afraid that if I buy a new LCD that the problem will come back.
