Follows a brief description of the problem:
After a period of about 15 - 18 months, a relevant number of Powerbook 17" 1.67 Ghz owner (the TOP of the whole laptop market available at the buy date) noticed that entire lines of pixel suddenly flaw.
The pixel lines are of various colors: magenta, red, blue, yellow.
The buy date is, in most case, around March - April 2005.
A new line about every week. The display becames full of stuck lines.
The problem is common to a relevant number of Powerbook owners all over the world, and more user are coming out.
And now, some pictures of the issue:

We also obtained an article on Appledefects.com.
Please post comments to this article, and specify dectails, such as the buy date and the first manifestation of the problem.
Other articles will follow as soon as users will report their experience with the Apple Call Center, that continues to NEGATE the existence of the problem. Stay tuned!

The Proof
So I made the Concierge appointment with the Genius Bar and I drove to the Apple store where I purchased my PowerBook. I showed the obvious defect to the Genius, Bart, who took all of my information. He told me the only thing that they could do was send it away to get fixed and it would take a week. He said it is either the MLB or the LCD. He also put on the work order Accidental or Cosmetic Damage: N which contradicts a previous post. So the cost for the repair is listed as $333.25. That is with parts and labor.
I asked Bart if he would like to see this discussion board to see everyone with this problem and he told me "No, we are not supposed to look at the discussions". Well someone should.
Apple really needs to do something to rectify this situation. It is blatantly obvious that this issue is effecting a certain model (17" G4 PowerBook 1.67Ghz) a certain date (around March - April 2005) and from a certain distributor (Factory: W8 Shanghai China).
How many of these faulty machines need to turn up on this discussion board before something is done? I am a loyal MAC user and have been for years and this is very discouraging. Having paid top dollar to get the top of the line machine you just assume that the product that you buy will be sturdy enough to make it 2 years at the very least. If there is one thing that I thought I was buying, it was quality and it is yet to be seen if Apple will stand by their product. I sure hope they do the right thing and repair this defect without charge and without harming years of loyalty by their customers effected by this.
Hi Kyle, thanks for posting your useful comment. It is clear, Apple should do something for us, we paid for a top quality computer and this situation is absolutely unacceptable.
Purchased my PB17" on June 4th 2005 (only 17months old and has never been dropped etc.). So whilst I was inserting a new logic board into my old 15" Titanium (another machine that broke after a year and a half :( ) I turn around to check something on the 17" and hurrah, my brand new 1 pixel wide top to bottom cyan line.
I've used Macs all my computing life (I'm a designer), but a pattern has definitly emerged. One and a half to two years after purchase the machine breaks and results in either expensive spare parts or a new purchase. Like others, I did not buy the extended warrenty because I was under the illusion that a $3000+ computer would not be acting up like this after such a short period of time.
Needless to say, let's hope that Apple can actually do something about this. The sad thing is that if this happens to my new MacBook, I will seriously consider switching to a PC (aarggh). That being said, PCs are a **** of a lot cheaper and I bet that it won't take long for some clever bod to get OSX running fully on a PC the way that Windows etc can now run on a Mac.
This IMO would be a huge shame, I prefer working with Macs but I am not a millionaire and can not afford to just replace my machine outright everytime something goes wrong. When I do pay top dollar for something I expect quality, durability and good customer support. So far with this purchase I haven't gotten any.
I too am a Designer and have used MACs forever. I have purchased 5 macs over the past 7 years, not too mention other software, hardware, iPods, and such and have been pretty satisfied. But this really disappoints me. After being loyal, touting the OS over the PC and generally being happy with the product, having this happen and having nobody from Apple trying to take action seriously makes me think about looking into other options with my next purchase.
Does anybody have any suggestions for a different machine for Web Designers?
I am trying to do something about this. All of us leaving messages all over the place is not helping. I am one of the unlucky ones who bought an April 2005 powerbook g4 17in. I can barely see my screen now. This was a £2000 machine!!
I am trying to get together a story for watchdog whom i have contacted. Please e mail me directly with your story to alexwheeler@ntlworld.com
I would also like to start a petition. I will wait to see what response I get. Please contact everyone you know with this problem and go onto every forum and website and leave my e mail address so that I can put this all together in some order!
Apple have deleted a thread that was running on their website with all photos of screen problems so send your photos to me also. We must not let this rest!!!
Hello Vincenzo,
I'm very glad you set up this blog. I tried checking the discussion board (as I do everyday, since this problem started) but it gone. I recieved the following error message "Error: you do not have permission to view the requested forum or category."; and even my posts on the subject have been removed!??!!
What happened? I hope we can still get in touch with all who were experiencing this problem.
This is really disturbing.
Apple have deleted the entire thread, photos and messages from the site regarding this issue. A blatant act of censorship and, IMO, an affirmation that they acknowledge the PB17" has serious manufacturing flaws and are trying to brush this problem aside.
If they want people to switch from PCs to Macs then they had better start producing machines that are not faulty and addresses problems when they arise in a more civil manner. I already now of three people who switched from a PC to a Mac and then switched straight back after they experienced similar problems.
I will be over the next few days be putting together a simple web site where we can post all this information again and where Apple can not censor it (um, thinking back to the 87 ad it seems that Big Brother is in fact Jobs himself!).
Alex Wheeler in the UK has started to approach such organizations as Watch, I am going to start to contacting similar people here in the US. I suggest we get as many people together on this and act together.
I'll post back when I have more details.
Regards, David.
Somebody deleted the thread on the discussion board. This is disturbing!
I used to be a proud owner of pb17". Now it's embarassing to even get it out of my bag, let alone use it for teaching (I'm a teacher). I am one of earliest victims of the pixel line problem. Several months have passed. The number of lines consistently increases, up to 19 now. An email was even tried to Jobs at mac.com. No response. Now the thread is gone too.
hw
David, Let us know when you get a website up and going so that we can all post our details on there.
Alex Wheeler
Hmm, Apple censored our thread.
My login is blocked too, and now I have a read-only access to the thread.
If they think to stop us with this act, they're wrong.
Well'go on posting on the forum, and on this blog.
Look at the Apple board now. They have edited another thread on this subject.
I've made a new thread on the Apple Discussion Board.
Please start to post another time ;)
Soon I will finish a on-line form in wich every user could post his dectails about the Pixel Line Issue.
I am putting together a 'file' for 'Watchdog', a TV programme on consumer news, scams and grievances. They are interested if there is enough info. I would also like to take this to the media. Please Vincenzo could you e mail me any of the information and e mails that you have regarding this issue. The more info I have the more chance we have of the media and 'Watchdog' taking this on. Anybody else please e mail me with your problems. We are looking for powerbook 17" owners purchased in early to mid 2005 with screen problems.
alexwheeler@ntlworld.com
Vincenzo, no point in both of us doing a web site regarding this. If you want to do it you can or I do not mind doing it and hosting on my site. We should concentrate all of this information in one place so that everybody can find it and reference it with no problems. This includes all relevant links etc. to other resources.
Another alternative is for me to host all the serial info, image links etc and have people post comments on this blog. We should also try ad contact everybody who posted on the Apple thread before it was shut down and ask them to do so again on the new site.
Let me know what you want to do.
Regards, David.
Vincenzo et al. I am putting together a site here to catalog all of the information. I will have it finished tomorrow (Thursday). If you wish add / subtract anything then let me know at david at crosspond dot com.
Regards, David.
Hi there, I will write the story of my PB at the weekend. Who of you wants to have the report?
Greetings fish
David, thanks for the help. I'll contact every user that emailed me his story about the issue.
i just got the same probleme starting with one line.
i got my computer from the art school am attending, so i will go and talk to theem as soon as possible.
OK the page to post your pictures and manufacture info is ready and can be seen [ here ].
I am still learning PHP and mySQL so if any one can help me out with some PHP form validation I'd really appreciate it.
My email address is david (at) crosspond (dot) com
Regards.
One of the german affected customers might get in contact with the c't magazine. They have article category about such things.
Simple. Did u try a different resolution setting in the display settings and then go back to the correct one?
Most at Apple are clueless.
My pb 17" g4, 1.67ghz, bought on April 2005 started stucking a blue column line... Exactly as everyone here is reporting
Vincenzo, thanks for taking action about this!!!
My Powerbook is also affected by the same problem.
Machine Name: PowerBook G4 17"
Machine Model:PowerBook5,7
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.2)
CPU Speed: 1.67 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Bus Speed: 167 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.9.1f1
Serial Number: W851304LSQ5
It was purchased around June 2005, and 25th November 2006 a thin blue line appeared along the left-hand side of the screen.I have reset pmu, pram, nvram with no results.
It happened to me too.
i'll try to post photos.
Ive got 2 yellow vertical lines both about 1/3 in from the edges. I am very good with keeping computers healthy. I have a G4 desktop and powerbook right now. Desktop has never had an issue. I dont bother with Apple Care as i never need repairs.
I guess this is the exception. Should be a class action suit for a defective product.
Diana, please post your manufacture info and a photograph onto my database at www.crosspond.com/apple.php so that we can collate all the information in one place. Please provide a photo of your PB as it substantiates the claim.
Thank you, David Hudd
Just got myself a new addition to my vertical lines collection. A nice new red one on the left hand side of my screen. I have updated the picture on my [ database ]. If you wish to do the same then send me the link. If you have not already done so, please add your PB to it.
As of yet there is still no "technical' solution to this other than to spend a $1000 on a new LCD. So Apple, please issue a recall as this is a problem that will not go away from what is clearly a faulty batch of LCDs. Otherwise please provide a technical resolution to a problem that is affecting users world wide.
Regards, David Hudd.
Serial# W85152ANRJ3
Same problem 1 pixel wide top to bottom cyan line.
Ayman, please post a picture and your manufacture info onto my [ database ].
Thanks, David.
I recently posted mine on David Hudd's site.
Even if there is a recall, I may have a problem - I dropped it like 6 months ago, and the people at the Apple store told me that there's no way they can fix it, because they're a tiny indent on the corner, and a couple scratches on the laptop (not the screen, mind you).
This is just unacceptable.
Just happened to me today: a 1 pixel wide vertical line, magenta in colour, near the right edge of the 17" PowerBook G4 screen. Running 10.3.9, here is the machine info:
Serial number: W85120G9RJ3
Name: PowerBook G4 (Aluminum Model 2005)

guys, same computer, same story.
bought my pb 17" in march 05. serial number starts with W85, and of course there are little lines spreading their seeds all over my lcd screen.
it's four till today... sure more to come.
can't take it!!!
I have added mine in too...
I shall add some links and info to my site over at www.mac-help.com

Hi,
Spoke with Apple CR today here in Australia --- I now have four lines on my G4 17" (manufactured April 05). I was absolutely stonewalled -- the rep simply said not enough people had come forward with the issue to warrant Apple looking at the issue.
I am so frustrated by Apple.
ben@onegiantleap.com.au
Same issue here, except my screen developed a two inch wide black area to the far right of the display. I posted details at crosspond.com as well as a photo.
I have called Apple and talked to Brian, Tier 1 Customer Service, Charles. Tier 2 Product Specialist, and Mika in Customer Relations. All of them do the usual sympathy thing, deny any knowledge of the problem, suggest that I should have bought AppleCare and that to fix my laptop would be unfair to all those who have bought AppleCare. Can't really blame them, probably mandated give the kind of replys.
The AppleCare comment is what gets me the most - unfair to AppleCare customers to fix my laptop. What is unfair is me paying $2500 plus for a badly made, obviously defective batch laptop, from a company that is clearly loosing its way with its customer base. It was bad enough finding out that my 8x Superdrive was crippled, via firmware, to burn at 2x with vertually every media type other than Apple's own. This, however takes the biscuit.
I will forward photos, details to whoever is attempting to make this public. So far crosspond seems to be the biggest community, but if I can be of help, email me at :generalcontact@fastmail.fm. Also let me know if there are any other sites or petitions that I might want to post to. Beside my intense irritation at loosing proper use of my laptop, I am equally annoyed at Apples growing lack of responsibility towards their customers.

It appears that Apple have gone and removed the latest thread from their forum regarding the faulty batch of 17" Powerbooks yet again. This might be a glitch in the system, though I strongly doubt, but I can no longer log in to post on the forums. I voiced my opinion politely in two discussions yesterday and maybe pushed a few buttons at Apple. I keep copies of all my forum postings regarding this issue. They are all contain clean language with a few annoyed, but not hateful remarks. Nothing I can identify that would lead any non-biased forum to be concerned. If it is true that they have blocked me, then they have gone a step further than censorship through the removal of discussions from their forums. They are of course within their rights to do so, as stated in the user agreement:
"* Apple reserves the right to delete any contribution, or take action against any account, at any time, for any reason."
I may of course be experiencing a temporary hiccup that is preventing me from accessing the site. I shall try again latter a let you all know. Lets hope Apple are not resorting to such extreme steps.
TO ALL THE OWNER OF THE POWERBOOK 17''
PLEASE be AWARE that APPLE delelted alla my post messages about the huge scandal of the defective pixel lined on the monitor.
They deleted my post and they do not allow me to post any other messages.
SHAME on THIS ABUSE FROM APPLE
SHAME ON APPLE UNETHICAL BEHAVIOUR
SHAME ON THIS CHEAP MADE IN CHINA HARDWARE SCANDAL
ANYONE INTERESTED TO FIGHT PLEASE LET ME KNOW
APPLE DO NOT CARE AT ALL ABOUT MY COMPLAINT:
I have bought this PowerBook 14 months ago.
Now I have 5 vertical lines of DEFECTIVE pixels.
1 line just added this week.
What is this problem about? is it about cheap Made in China hardware?
I NEVER NEVER SUCH problems with my previous WINDOWS notebooks. This PowerBook is very expensive and cannot broke after such a short time.
PLEASE HELP ME TO REPAIR (you have a similar extensive repair problem with the 15 ‘’ PowerBook).
You can check my hardware and software registered to verify I am a good customer of Apple till now.
1 pixel wide top to bottom cyan line just appaered today 4 4 07. Sky blue color, found you guys looking for an explanation, I'm seriously depressed...
My serial # lines up with the rest of you.
Mike.
apple have deleted the longest-running thread on this issue from their discussion board. can they really get away with this!? i am outraged and disgusted.
in many ways it reminds me of the first gen nano scratching issue. they steadfastly refused to acknowledge the problem, only to discreetly start slipping in cheap plastic cases, and then resolving the issue with a return to aluminium casing for the second gen.
they seem to have got away with it with nano, i hope the same doesn't happen with this issue...
I really can't believe this s... Today i have a second line appeared on the screen. What else can we do and do you honestly think the Apple is going to do something?
One information please, am i supposed to report this defect to Apple (and if yes, where) in order to have free display replacement, if they change their minds regarding this matter?
Thx in advance.

I was lucky in that the Visa card I used to purchase my 17" Powerbook extended my 1 yr apple warranty another year.
Apple repaired the PB and Visa paid the $327.33 repair bill.
I bought mine in late Apr 2005 so I got in just in time on the Visa extended warranty.
hope that helps others.
Thankgod I found this. I though I was going crazy not being able to locate this issue anywhere.
We bought a Powerbook 17" in November 2005, Perth, Australia. Lines started appearing 4 weeks ago.
I have called Apple support (very difficult to get through let me tell you), and registered my problem. Also called about the cost of a new screen... $1000 upwards.
Have logged my details and issue with a photo here and have emailed CHOICE magazine who have forwarded the issue along with a link to the editor of CHOICE computers. Hopefully our super watchdog in Oz can help us.

Hi Vincenzo & PBsters,
Thanks for providing such an excellent blogging resource for folks outraged at Apple’s shameful conduct in censoring discussion of the 17inch 1.67Ghz G4 PowerBook "Bridget Riley" display defect, and their censuring of people engaged with that discussion.
As an owner of an afflicted PowerBook with some time to spare, I conducted some campaigning research into the issue, and posted the results to the official Apple Discussions forum. Despite containing an appeal that, “In the interests of free speech, fair discussion, customer loyalty and respecting Apple’s customers, I hope and trust you will leave this thread open to replies,” nevertheless the Apple Discussions forum moderators promptly deleted my very first post!
So, inspired by your good example, I’ve posted my campaigning research results to my own blog:
17inch G4 1.67GHz PowerBooks - vertical line screen defect: Recall for Repair?
http://301url.com/pb17lines
For those concerned about this issue, there’s some actions you can take and some questions you may be able to answer contained therein, as well as live links to all the related web resources I could find.
I know this might seem like I’m trying to create a rival blogging resource, but that’s really not my intention at all. The comment facility in both blogs is invaluable, but not well suited for long and structured contributions. And the more places on the web that address the issue, the more likely it is that we’ll snag some media interest, and increase the obligation on Apple to act with honour in instigating a global a Display Repair Extension Program.
Peace & Love,
dalinian

BTW, do please feel free to contact me directly about the "Bridget Riley" display defect, at:
tim_d_jones[at]yahoo.co.uk
I’m especially interested to hear about:
> Media coverage – locally, nationally, internationally, or on the web
> Apple granting “special case” free repairs under local statutory consumer rights legislation
> What factors influence Apple’s decision to instigate a Repair Extension Program
> Has anyone pursued the mediation/arbitration route so far, eg: http://complaint.bbb.org?
> Has anybody tried calling Ken Bell, Executive Offices of Apple, M-F 8am to 5pm Pacific, on 916 399 7169?
> Has anybody tried calling Gene Teluse, VP of Customer Care, at Apple Corporate on 408 996 1010?
> Is a class action suit regarding defective Apple 17inch G4 Powerbooks is being pursued in the USA or in any other nation’s jurisdiction?

Hi Comrades,
To give our blossoming campaigning activity more of an identity, I’ve named my blog the Free Repair Campaign for Apple 17inch PowerBooks:
The name change reflects a shift in my attitude – enough with the researching and consolidating information, it’s time to bite back!
Apple Inc is a multi-billion-dollar transnational corporation, and it’s treating some of its most loyal customers, allies and advocates with ignorance, censorship and censure. As long as we act as isolated, atomised individuals, Apple will hold the whip hand. But we have the strength of numbers in our favour – our powerfulness lies in us coordinating the international application of our collective intelligence, determination, and creativity.
The great only appear great because we are on our knees. LET US RISE!”
James Larkin
source: statue on O’Connell Street, Dublin, Ireland
Or as Malcolm X put it, "I for one believe that if you give people a thorough understanding of what confronts them and the basic causes that produce it, they'll create their own program, and when the people create a program, you get action." I say it’s time for us to create a program – so who’s with me?
How about we begin by making a concerted, coordinated and international drive to get the media on our side and boost our cause with the oxygen of publicity?
To that end, I’ve thought through and designed...
A Two Phase Distributed Publicity Seeking Campaign Task
> Own an Apple 17inch G4 1.67Ghz PowerBook with the Dreaded “Bridget Riley” vertical lines screen defect?
> Tired of being ignored, censored and censured by Apple Inc?
> Want to help out in securing a global Display Repair Extension Program?
> Then TUNE IN, READ ON and JOIN IN!
From my experiences in grass-roots campaigning, I can confidently assert that one activity in which we can all play a part, with a relatively compact effort from each of us, yet yielding potentially high impact results, is a two phase Distributed Publicity Seeking campaign task. The more we get journalists to cover the censorship, censuring and silence scandal at Apple Inc, the greater the pressure there will be on Apple to act with honour in instigating the global Display Repair Extension Program we’d like to see.
So begins our new Publicity Campaign Page, from where I seek your help in creating and disseminating our first Media Release:
Thanks for reading this far. Now please click on the link above, assimilate the tactic, check out the draft Media Release, and I hope you’ll feel inspired to actively commit some of your intelligence, determination, and creativity to our cause.
Warm regards,

“What is hateful…is not rebellion but the despotism which induces the rebellion; what is hateful are not rebels but the men, who, having the enjoyment of power, do not discharge the duties of power; they are the men who, having the power to redress wrongs, refuse to listen to the petitioners that are sent to them.”

Hi All,
There’s a new wiki dealing with our “Bridget Riley” screen defect:
You’ll find all the info that used to be at Tim Jones’ blog, plus more: a Discussions forum, a help page on making Your Contributions, Campaign Resources, six ACTION pages, and even a Campaign Mascot. Unlike a blog, to which you can make only unstructured comments, a wiki is a website that can be edited by anyone – like Wikipedia (which uses the same MediaWiki environment). So my hope is that it may become a focal point for our campaign, with many editors, all of us contributing initiatives and supporting each others actions.
I’ve explained why I think a Publicity Campaign would be a great tactic right now on the Discussions forum, created two ACTION+ Publicity pages and a downloadable Media Release draft:
> http://simurl.com/MR1-draft (448KB PDF)
I could use your help with distributing the Media Release final version from Fri 01 Jun 07 – here’s the plan:
Hope you’ll want to join me in turning up the pressure on Apple Inc by a notch or two.

Free Repair Campaign for Apple 17inch PowerBooks
Hi All,
One conclusion I draw from analysing the events leading up to Apple's most analogous Display Repair Extension Program is that the 15inch G4 PowerBook's 'white spots' defect had media coverage early on. As yet, our defect lacks for publicity, so I think that one activity in which we can all play a part, with a relatively compact effort from each of us, yet yielding potentially high impact results, is a two phase Publicity Campaign. The more Apple has to answer an array of journalists' questions about their censorship, censure and silence policies coupled with stinging afflicted owners for expensive and prolonged repairs, then the more pressure Apple will be under to acknowledge, investigate and repair our PowerBooks for free.
Phase One of our Publicity Campaign is now in progress, and it would be great if you could lend a hand - here's how:
1. Download our Media Release 1: Apple Inc Lets Down Loyal Customers with Censorship, Censuring & Silence (448KB PDF)
2. Seek out up to five journalist prospects (from the online tech media, for preference) who aren’t yet on our ACTION+: Publicity Contacts page (to avoid duplication), by online searching or real world research
3. Add a list of those journalists and the media outlets they work for to our ACTION+: Publicity Contacts page (to avoid future duplication)
4. Send our Media Release 1 to all those one-to-five journalists, either online or by snail mail
5. Encourage any other known folks with afflicted PowerBooks (or even friends, relatives, sympathisers, etc.) to do the same
None of this is set in stone - we can discuss it publicly at Campaign Discussions#Publicity Campaign, and do please feel free to contact me with any questions, suggestions, recommendations, or loophole corrections - by leaving a message on my Wikia talk page or by email to tim_d_jone{at}yahoo.co.uk.
Warn regards,

Free Repair Campaign for Apple 17inch PowerBooks
Ok, am i a bit late?
I just had this problem 2 days ago (10 June 2007).
I bought this powerbook on 30 sept 2005.
my s/n is started with W85.........
I m kind of lost , i dont know how to fix it, i dont know where to take it to fix. i bought it at Apple Reseller store and my warranty is passed and i dont have any AppleCare. How i suppose to fix the problem? i dont want to buy a new comp again, for just used this one less than 3 years.
Just another quick and easy way to spread the word of this problem. I have just uploaded a picture to my FaceBook account for all to see.
If you have one or a member of a similar social networking or "I don't get out much because of the kids so need to keep in contact and meet new people online" group kind of person like me, then I suggest you do the same.
Regards, David Hudd
my 17" toshiba p30 notebook has also developed thin coloured lines.
I seem to get a new one every couple of weeks. Perhaps toshiba purchased screens form the same company.
How could I find out?
Interesting
After I had bough my 17" powerbook in oktober 2004 my display started showing white spots. It got replaces in april 2005.
In June 2007 I got my fist dead pixel line. Now that I knwow that this must be a production failure, I want to take further steps.
I have been contacted by a couple of people in the US who are looking into taking out a class action law suit against Apple over the vertical lines issue. One of them is a lawyer called Eric Pavlack who is investigating the experiences that others have had with Apple over this problem.
If you wish to contribute (and I urge you to) then he can be contac via email at epavlack at cohenandmalad dot com or via telephone on +1 317-636-6481.
Regards, David Hudd.
Same thing happened to me. My powerbook sports close to 30 vert lines now and growing. I still have Apple Care so hopefully they can fix it. I'll keep you posted.
Hi,
I would like to say that this problem is not privative of the MacBooks but also the iMacs G5 and recently the Intels and of course Apple is NOT acknowledging the problem !!!
Enrique Diazruanova from mexico
I live in Brazil and my Powerbook screen is also presenting this problem. I would appreciate any hint in how to fix it.
I just started a blog (in french) on that particular screen defect :
http://appledontcare.blogspot.com/
We need to be active in that case!
PowerBook G4 17"
1.67 GHz
W85xxxxxxxx
SEVEN lines at the moment and keep appearing. APPLE just sucks on this issue. No responsability, no nothing. They just say " its more 600 euros for a new display". WTF!!!? One more costumer that they lose. I was going to invest all of my office hardware design in new MACS but at this point... screw them.
I don´t think this problem is exclusively from apple 17" because I have a 15" Power book G4 I start to notice the same syntoms, I seen like flashes of distortion in my screen.
I want to support this claim...Justice!!!
i have been given a powerbook G4 from my college and i thought the lines was something to do with me. I was scared because i wasnt to sure how i caused it. So i looked into the situation because after a couple more days another line appeared and they kept on appearing each week or so it was annoying me and i wanted to fix it. Until i discovered that most Powerbook owners seem to have the same problem as me! I was so happy to having my own laptop but now im angry at the way apple seems to take no notice towards this problem! I really want it fixed but i dont want to pay a hefty price. Annoying, very annoying!
My 17" G4, purchased April 2005, has just developed a top to bottom cyan line of pixels. I goggled the problem, thinking I'd find a solution, but am now just depressed as this seems to be a common and unfixable problem. I too have been using macs since I was 6 years old, but am starting to feel less and less loyal...
well, my powerbook 15" got nearly the same problem. there is one single horizontal line of defected pixels in the middle of the screen. it would change colors or disappear depending on the angle of the screen. it appeared one month ago and bothers me a lot. working with photoshop or watching vids is just impossible. unfortunately i can't rely on any guarantee for it's too old. i thought about buying a new screen but i mistrust the further living expectations of the whole system. today it just decided to don't recognize the battery anymore after being in complete coma. the battery works but the system says there is none...what can i do?
